Tournament Information

It was the honour and privilege for Irish Water Polo Association to have been awarded Qualification Group A of the 2006 European Junior Men’s Waterpolo Championships. The tournament took place in the National 50 Metre Swimming Pool, University Arena, Limerick (May 4-7). The countries taking part were: Belarus, Great Britain, Israel, Poland, Portugal and Ireland.

LEN (Ligue Européenne de Natation) nominated TWPC Secretary, Manfred Vater (Germany) as Delegate. The neutral referees who officiated at the tournament were: Arkadi Voevodin (Russia), Yavor Nestorov (Bulgaria), Akif Uz (Turkey), Irakli Kikashvili (Georgia), Serghei Melnikov (Moldova) and Alkis Alikviades (Cyprus).

After a tough four days of competition, the team of Great Britain took top spot, with Poland coming second. GBR won all 5 of their games, Poland won 4 out of 5. Congratulations to GB and Poland and coaches Norman Leighton, Jerome Read (both of GBR) and to Edward Kujawa of Poland. Good luck to both in Oradea (ROM) in the 2006 European Junior Men’s Waterpolo Championships

Unfortunately, hosts Ireland could not manage a win. Although coach Brian O’Dwyer’s men pushed many opponents close, they lost all their games.
